19th 20th C European Art Art Gallery Nsw Support the european art acquisition fund for pre 20th century works. the core of the art gallery of new south wales’ pre 1900 european collection is a group of important british 19th century paintings including works by ford madox brown, frederic leighton and edward poynter. these were among the art gallery’s first purchases. The 20th century galleries in the refurbished 1972 wing of the art gallery of new south wales’ south building, now known as naala nura, showcase works from our australian and international collections, highlighting the connections and distinctions between local artists and broader global developments over some of the most tumultuous, exciting and innovative decades in art and human history.

19th C European Art Art Gallery Nsw Artgallery.nsw.gov.au. the art gallery of new south wales (agnsw), founded as the new south wales academy of art in 1872 and known as the national art gallery of new south wales between 1883 and 1958, is located in the domain, sydney, australia. it is the most important public gallery in sydney and one of the largest in australia. Ailsa lee brown was born in sydney and studied under thea proctor and adelaide perry at the julian ashton art school. her prints emphasised design, surface patterning, flattened forms and decorative detail, typical of sydney modernism at the time. brown abandoned linocuts in favour of wood engravings in 1936, making several in the late 1930s. The australian contemporary art collection focuses on abstract painting, expressionism, screen culture and pop art. the collection of art from the pacific region began in 1962 at the instigation of our then deputy director, tony tuckson. between 1968 and 1977, the gallery acquired over 500 works from the moriarty collection, one of the largest. The 12,000 works in this collection represents a variety of artists, styles and techniques with works ranging from traditional japanese ukiyo e prints to european old masters and 19th and 20th century prints and drawings, both australian and international. the art gallery of nsw also has a series of special exhibitions.
