On january 20, 2023, lieutenant colonel kristen hoeckel, major kelly farris, chief master sergeant deborah turrill, technical sergeant autumn davis, and technical sergeant emily knight made history as the first all female aircrew in the west virginia air national guard’s 130th airlift wing to take flight. together, they have logged thousands. She has helped provide the personnel that has made the institution a leader in rural health care throughout west virginia, as evidenced by the 64 percent of physicians practicing in rural areas of west virginia who are wvsom graduates. one wvsom graduate and “wonder woman” recipient is miller, who earned her medical degree from wvsom in 2002.
