1. don't blow your entire back to school budget before the first day. even if you have taken others' advice and satisfied all of your own pinterest worthy classroom dreams, you won't entirely know what you need until you're in the room, with your students, for at least one full week. experience your new schedule fully, and then go finish shopping. Your students need and deserve solid, consistent, and fair classroom management. lastly, one of the most important mistakes to avoid: lowering your expectations. our students come to us with many personal struggles (poverty, malnutrition, family issues, neighborhood violence, learning disabilities, etc.).
Here are some big mistakes i made my first year of teaching, and what i wish i’d known. 1. i didn’t ask for help. i felt like asking for help from other teachers—especially longtime teachers who were experts in their craft—would annoy them. i definitely didn’t want to ask my administrators for help either, as i didn’t want to be. Mistake three: not being reflective. “take chances. make mistakes, get messy…”. those are words to live by, ms. frizzle. teaching is all about mistakes, but if you’re not reflective about the mistakes you’ve made you’re just wasting everyone’s time. there are always ways to improve, rework, or new ideas to try. 7. being afraid to speak up. beginning teachers have much to offer their school communities, but may be hesitant to speak up among their veteran colleagues. start your growth as a teacher leader. Mistake #4: not having a seating chart. enforcing a seating chart has to happen the first day of school. wait any longer and students will begin to think that they make their seating decisions and any attempt to enforce a seating chart later will lead to a power struggle. you can always ease up later in the school year or have students move.
