юааreviewюаб юааaberlourюаб Aтащbunadh юааalbaюаб Drinkhacker It’s the first line extension for a’bunadh in the distillery’s history. as with standard a’bunadh bottlings, a’bunadh alba is bottled with no age statement and at cask strength. it’s a wildly different spirit than “original” a’bunadh, which is overwhelming with sherry, spice, and fruit. in alba, the wood takes center stage. This is where aberlour distinguishes itself from most other speyside region distilleries (apart from the macallan): while most of the region’s distilleries rely on the lighter caramel notes that ex bourbon casks impart, allowing the heather and honey notes of the whisky to shine through, aberlour offers up a variety of sensations, including the all sherry influenced a’bunadh.

Single Malt Scotch whisky Collection aberlour

Single Malt Scotch Whisky Collection Aberlour Nose. 84 84. neat: medium intensity. typical fruitiness from aberlour here, with apricot, pineapple, with traces of nectarines in the background. citrusy sourness notes as well. the alcohol feels softer than on the 12yo distillery exclusive reviewed some time ago, even though the abv is quite higher. With the release of a’bunadh alba, scotch whisky drinkers are now able to make what might be closest thing to an apples to apples comparison of these two cask types (at least as far as official bottlings go). in contrast to its predecessor in the a’bunadh range, there’s nary a sherry cask to be found within sniffing distance of the new alba. Where it’s from: aberlour is a long running speyside single malt (the distillery formed in 1879) that usually lets its hooch double rest in spanish sherry and american oak casks for a minimum of 12 years. interestingly, the alba release does not have an age statement (though that isn’t a first for the distillery) and also lacks a sherry. The aberlour a’bunadh has a dark mahogany color with a pronounced copper and reddish hue. on the nose it has a strong spirit note, ample proof that at 59.6% abv it has half again as much alcohol as the typical scotch whisky. there are distinctive fruit notes, more cooked than dried, featuring peach, apricot, prune and especially golden.

Aberlour a’bunadh alba – batch 005. in 2019 aberlour a’bunadh alba saw the light. it is a first fill bourbon cask version of its popular sherry counterpart. it shows a different side of aberlour, one that we’re not very familiar with (except for the glorious 1999 cask #3856 perhaps). today we’re trying batch #5 of this american oak. The capacity of aberlour is around 3,8 million litres per year. the core range includes the 12,16 and 18 years as well as the a'bunadh and the casg annamh. the alba is both named after scotland & the type of white oak used for maturation. (quercus alba). a'bunadh means the original by the way.
