Album Review Nightwish Decades Antihero Magazine This was the song that helped put the band on the top of my favorites list, i believe that this song is one of the best releases in all of music. also included are “nemo”, “the carpenter”, and “the kingslayer”. the 22 track, 2 hour and 21 minute album is one of the best greatest hits collections that i have ever heard. Nightwish aren’t ones to skimp on the theatrics. they have their moments of unashamed cheesiness – sleeping sun is a slow burner, while end of all hope veers dangerously into cheddar metal territory – but if you can stomach the saccharine then you’ll be just fine. the record ends on a rare, bare bones demo of the band’s early track.

The opening track, music, delivers an impressive soundscape. it feels very tribal with the fast drum rhythms and haunting chant style vocals. the rumbling instrumentation creates a haunting build up, and yet, the track does not go in the direction you might expect. a number of ethereal realms are encountered before the track kicks off with vocals. The two cd decades is a reverse chronological trawl through the finnish symphonic metal behemoth’s catalogue, released to celebrate their 20th anniversary. all the better to trace their trajectory right back to the beginning, and 1996’s self titled demo, through all the lineup changes, shed vocalists and shifts of emphasis. An amazing live album, a refresh back to the group’s old roots with some new blood, and it was done amazingly! please go check out the album for yourself, and see when the group is coming near you! one thing i have found out is they really give 100,000% at their shows, and cannot wait to be back in front of their sonic cannon of sound!.
