Members. posted march 12, 2008. if i remember correctly the x88r has three channels while the sp77 only has two, the x88r is hand built and carries the famous soldano lifetime transferable warranty, the sp77 does not. to me this implies a much likely better component selection and build quality on the 88. the x88r is by far the more preferable.
Soldano Sp 77 Preamp In A Bogner Ecstasy El34 Poweramp A Great Couple Members. posted march 11, 2011. i've had all 3 soldano pre's and balancing their tonal performance mixed with their price i'd say the sp77 is by far the best. sp77: $400, 88: 1600, 99: $2500, the sp is easy and cheap to mod and that combined with a good poweramp gives you a winner. i don't know the mesa pre so i can't compare it to. It's still a great sounding preamp and sounds very good through a quality all tube power amp. if you can score one for $350 400, it's a good deal. (however, by the time you add in a good power amp, you're a long ways towards a used slo.) the clean of the sp 77 is ok, but not great. The purple faced sp77's are made in the usa. its extremely important to choose the correct power amp and more importantly the correct speaker cabs and speakers. the reason that people sell the sp77 is because they think they are going to get the same voicing and gain as the slo or they think they are getting the non motorized version of the xr99. The japanese soldanos are pretty inconsistent, and that´s why soldano started up production of the american sp77 and the hot rod series after just a short run of japanese amps. some were good, some less so. but anyway, the soldanos are rock and hard rock amps and some of the best in the business, but it´s not a thrash or metal sound.

Really like the sp77 as it's got a nice, bright clean channel and the gain ch with a suhr riot really wakes up. sounds great when run through an 11r as well for quiet practice. it's like instant 80s in a box. what power amp did people use with it as this can make or break any preamp.
