(if you had one pair of non ceiling speakers, they would be either front height or rear height). in this diagram you posted, the important thing is that the atmos speakers are supposed to be placed at the same width as your l r mains see. The width of the atmos for 45 degrees elevation is 8.4 feet spacing between the center of the speakers. for 55 degrees elevation its 5.9 feet spacing between the center of the speakers. some people suggest 45 degrees and others go closer together for 55 degrees. hope this helps!.

I currently have 5 in ceiling speakers, for a 5.1 surround setup. my receiver is capable of 5.1.2, so i'm adding 2 more speakers (rsa 635). i've attached some pictures of my living room, with the current setup, and two proposed placements for the new speakers. so all the speakers will be in ceiling, or possibly flanking the tv on the wall. My 5.1 setup is pretty perfect right now regarding speaker placement, but i can't add extra surround speakers to make it a 7.x.x setup. all i can do is ceiling mount 2 additional speakers at the spots marked on the image to use as atmos speakers, to create a 5.1.2 setup. these are not reflecting but directly pointed towards to seating position.
