Balaam rode his donkey along with the moabites to go curse the israelites. we don’t know why god was “angry when he went” (number 20:22) but we can imagine god knows balaam’s ways. to end balaam’s willfulness, god sends an angel to block the path. but balaam, intent on his assignment, doesn’t notice the angel. Balaam’s story is a cautionary tale. he was the prophet in the book of numbers who ended up getting schooled by a talking donkey. to be honest, i’ve read the story a few times and never really appreciated just how bad this guy was. after all, he sought god and never spoke a single word that god did not tell him to speak. Balaam is a figure that is briefly mentioned in the old testament. he is a pagan prophet who was hired by the moabite king, balak, to curse the israelites. however, despite balak’s attempts to pay him off and persuade him to curse the israelites, balaam is ultimately unable to do so. instead, he blesses the israelites three times, speaking. The donkey pressed balaam’s leg against the wall and he beat it even more. the animal eventually sat down and balaam was furious. after he had beaten it several times, the lord opened its mouth and it complained. at this point, his eyes were divinely opened and he saw an angel with a sword drawn standing in the way.
