Osteoarthritis has often been referred to as a wear and tear disease. but besides the breakdown of cartilage, osteoarthritis affects the entire joint. it causes changes in the bone and deterioration of the connective tissues that hold the joint together and attach muscle to bone. it also causes inflammation of the joint lining. Osteoarthritis (oa) is the most prevalent type of arthritis. it occurs when the smooth, slippery cartilage that coats the endings of bones begins to deteriorate at a joint (where two bones meet). this wear and tear can increase friction, bone spurring, pain, and stiffness. though oa can develop at any joint, it is most common in the hands. Corticosteroids may be given as a pill or as an injection into the painful joint. side effects may include thinning of bones, weight gain and diabetes. disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (dmards). these drugs can slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis and save the joints and other tissues from permanent damage.
