Flyply How To Build A Tortured Ply Canoe In 6 Minutes

This time lapse video shows the build of a 14ft open canoe using two sheets of 3mm ply and some fibreglass. the concept and design is by flo mo. it accompani. The canoe is fully symmetrical, so the layout is the same across each of the four quadrants once the lengthwise and cross center lines are accurately marked out. to save time and ensure symmetry all round i used the plan offsets to make a quarter hull template to mark out the cut lines, and simply flipped it around for each quarter and the gore (dart) end points as i went.

Now things start to get interesting, as it is time to start closing the gores together. flo mo first developed this build method using models, and found that when closing the gores the boat assumed a ‘banana’ shape. so, when building a full sized boat he lifted the ends of the ply to help ease the stress on the joints. I just came across this video and thought others may find it interesting also. An option when tripping is having my wife in her kayak that's been languishing in a friend's garage the last few years. indeed i was thinking about using 3mm ply and cloth inside and out. putting some numbers to the cost of materials it soon adds up with the epoxy and marine grade sheets. but then using good components makes life easier and you.
