The book has just released, and you can purchase it here: d&d volo’s guide to monsters. the fantasy grounds digital version of volo’s guide just like the book adds not only monsters, maps & backgrounds for the dungeon master, but also options for players. the integration of volo’s guide into fantasy grounds is very welcomed. You should definitely get the phb to make things easier on you and your players. if you are going to create your own adventures, pick up the monster manual, but pre built wotc adventures should have all of the stat blocks already in them. you may want the dmg as well, but i've managed to get buy with using a physical copy instead.
