The decimal system and place value. the montessori banking game focuses on the decimal system, which is a base 10 number system. the game helps children understand the concept of units, tens, hundreds, and thousands, and how numbers are composed of these values. through the exchange of beads, children learn the value of digits in different places.
This lesson is meant to be given to one or two children [age 5 ] on a work mat with access to a bead bank. the bead bank is one of the most expensive montessori materials but will get a lot of use. the bank game is included in the decimal system – place value learning portion of the montessori math path. before giving the bank game lesson. Our third recommended set is golden bead materials addition activity set #2. this set consists of 40 addition exercises and a presentation card. the work requires the use numeral cards. cards 2a 2b are static and dynamic addition. cards 2c 2d of this set are dynamic addition, zeros in the sum and addends. The tray is placed to one side. the montessori directress then explains that if we count the beads left on the mat we will have the answer to the subtraction sum. the child counts, starting with the units, then tens, 100’s and 1000’s. the child collects and places the corresponding small number cards below the beads at every stage. The golden bead material is brilliantly designed to allow a child to gain a tactile and muscular sensation of the numbers 1 to 1,000. these golden colored math beads are presented in units and wired together in bars of 10, squares of 100, and cubes of 1,000. not only does the golden bead material further the child's understanding of quantities.
