Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival The laura aboriginal dance festival is an exciting biennial gathering in cape york peninsula, highlighting the many diverse communities, language, song, dance and stories. The marrinyama dancers are from duchess, a small community south of mount isa in central queensland. the marrinyama usually stick their feathers on with blood, though for the festival a glue stick was used. this community adheres to age old traditions, and they are one of the last groups to still perform circumcisions as a rite of passage. Aboriginal culture is still strong in northern queensland and a dance and cultural festival, held every two years 15 kilometres from the outback town of laura, 300 kilometres north of cairns in the south of cape york peninsula, is a wonderful celebration of this. the communities participating come mainly from the cape york region, from cairns. A record crowd turned out for the 35th laura aboriginal dance festival this year. held every two years, the event has become a cultural icon drawing visitors.
