Uncertainty. slow. fast. so fast. too fast. if the first year of motherhood taught me anything, it’s how fleeting time with our little ones is. as the adage goes, the days are long, but the years are short. the tiny person you start the year with and the toddling toddler with an ever developing personality you end the year with shows just how. On the occasion of her daughter’s first birthday, first time mom, julia, reflects on the past year and the lessons she’s learnt in her initial 12 months of motherhood. we recently celebrated my daughter’s first birthday—a significant milestone that triggered a whole smorgasbord of emotions. Applying my skills as a mother to my very first nanny position came easily and flowed nicely into lyla’s schedule. i assisted lyla for the first 3 years of her life, i gave her the special attention she needed. i took on the role of mentor and big sister, while they were away. i had become her friend and teacher (in a sense) and encouraged. Today marks exactly one year so far into my journey of motherhood. little miss came into our lives the morning of june 23rd, 2014 and i haven’t been the same since. motherhood has so far been the most joyful, heart wrenching, and humbling experience of my entire life.

It’s okay to hold your baby. snuggle them as much as you want! if you don’t want to put your baby down, then don’t. if you don’t want someone else holding your baby right now, then don’t let them. you carried your baby for 9 months. it’ll take some time for them to get used to not being part of you so literally. There are many times that i want to have more patience, more creativity around his meals, or more time to read that book for the fourth time. but with that all aside, i know i’m a great mother and that i’ve learned a lot of lessons along the way—here are eight lessons i’ve learned during my first year of motherhood. 1. happy mama, happy.
