Instructions. technique 1: "wet on wet" horizontal blending. select at least two colors to blend together using horizontal strokes. technique 2: "wet on wet" circular blending. select at least two colors to blend together starting at a circle and having the colors get darker as you paint in circular strokes outwards. For blending my paint, i used a coated masonite board from an art supply store and mixed the paint on it with a drywall spatula. i also applied the paint to the canvas using the same spatula. you can mix acrylic paint with water to help it spread with less texture build up. if you are using oil based paint, each layer may take longer to dry. The easiest way to blend acrylic paint into a smooth gradient is to make sure you are using paint with the right level of consistency and the right type of brush. you want your paint to be the consistency of slightly thick gravy and it helps to use something like a filbert brush. the rounded tip is better for getting smooth blends.
