Greater Siren Siren Lacertina Greater Siren Levy Co Flвђ Flickr The greater siren (siren lacertina) which may exceed the 90 cm, is without any doubt the oddest and best known member of the family, albeit it results much less understood and unveiled in its secrets than many other species of amphibians. These appendages are crowded in the front of the body as opposed to being spread out. their skin is an olive or grayish brown color with black speckles and yellow dashes along its length (particularly on the dorsum). the underbelly tends to be lighter in color than the skin on the sides and back. Fig.2. still fields from a x ray video of breathing in siren lacertina. the animal is immersed in water 6cm deep (gray background) and lifts its head to breathe above the surface (white strip at top of fields). from 0 to 0.79s, the animal expands its buccal cavity slightly to open an airway and then exhales. Syren lacertina —custis in freeman and custis, 1807, account red river louisiana: 23. incorrect subsequent spelling of generic name. sirene lacertina — oken, 1816, lehrb. naturgesch., 3(2): 187. incorrect subsequent spelling of generic name. phanerobranchus dipus leuckart, 1821, isis von oken, 9: 260. substitute name for siren lacertina.

Origin usa: va, nc, sc, al, ga, fl iucn red book least concern cites no listing first described linnaeus, 1766. To resolve outstanding questions concerning the phylogeny of siren, we collected sequence and morphometric data from specimens across the range of siren. we found s. lacertina and s. reticulata to represent strongly supported monophyletic groups, with s. reticulata having a sister relationship to all other siren.
