The comics have the answer. the flash rebirth #3 by geoff johns forced barry to make an incredibly difficult decision, one that involved sacrificing his life to restore balance to the speed force. as flash runs to his presumed demise, superman catches up and pleads with barry to find another way. flash refuses and insists that superman isn’t. The flash and superman set off for the race but then realize that gangsters have placed illegal bets on who would win and the resulting profit they would make off the race would be used to further their criminal empires. the flash and superman agree to end the race in a tie and deny the gangsters to make any money off of them.

Historical rivalry. the man of steel and the flash first raced each other in 1967, in superman #199, by jim shooter curt swan, and george klein. like many of their future races, the pair go up against each other for charity. they competed twice for good causes, and in both instances, the races ended in a tie. That seems to ring true from wally’s first ever race against superman, on foot, in adventures of superman #463. superman doubts that the young speedster filling in for his mentor has what it takes to fill barry’s boots, but wally is quick to prove him wrong. wally would beat the man of steel again in the flash #209, even as superman flew.
