General wisdom says greens, blues, and purples are cool, and reds, oranges, and yellows are warm, after all, this color family feels…warm. while this is true if we’re dealing with primary colors, often use far more secondary colors and beyond instead of staying limited to primary colors in the real world. in truth, all colors have cool and. Warm and cool colors are categorized as warm and cool due to the feelings that one gets when looking at the hues. reds, yellows, and oranges are evocative of the sun and fire. therefore, they tend to convey a sense of warmth and comfort. cool colors, on the other hand, are reminiscent of earthy objects, such as grass and water.
Usually a purpley or gray brown is cool. if it has any kind of orange, yellow tint, it’s probably not a cool brown. learning to discern these subtle differences in color takes time and lots of practice. i find it helpful to find one or two examples of warm and cool shades of these colors in my closet, and compare potential purchases to those. Relativity of warm and cool colors. warm vs. cool colors are relative terms. for example, each color, whether primary or secondary, leans toward another color. this is referred to as color bias. as a result, blue may have a green or red bias, and red may have a yellow or blue bias. because of relativity, one hue of red may be warmer than another.
