Zenitsu couldn't easily beat inosuke in a fight, but he still stood up for nezuko, refusing to let a sword slinging stranger pick on innocent people like nezuko. to that end, zenitsu endured repeated blows from inosuke to shield nezuko from him until tanjiro could arrive to settle matters. Zenitsu depends on tanjiro quite frequently during intense situations early on such as when they come into contact with demons. this was due to zenitsu's low self esteem and a self deprecating belief that he was a weakling, and because tanjiro was less likely to experience fear. zenitsu respects and admires his leadership but also ridicules him out of jealousy whenever tanjiro mentions his. I'm caught up on both the anime and the manga, and i know that he only fights asleep, but that doesn't mean he's extremely weak awake. he's strong, but he's also incredibly afraid of anything and considers himself a weakling.
